Based on the award-winning novel by James McBride, “The Good Lord Bird” mini-series stars Ethan Hawke as abolitionist John Brown. The story is told from the point of view of “Little Onion”, a fictional enslaved young boy, who concealed his identity as a girl. Onion becomes Brown’s good luck charm and follows his family and abolitionist soldiers in their battle against slavery in Kansas, and in the famous 1859 Army depot raid at Harpers Ferry, one of the great catalysts for the Civil War.
This mixture of history and fiction is told with details, violence and good humor (without it, it would be hard to watch). Both Ethan Hawke (Brown) and Joshua Caleb Johnson (Onion) gives amazing performance.
A story worth knowing, a book worth reading and a series worth watching.
