Twelve people converge on a lake-side paradise, ready for a reunion put together by their mutual friend, Walter. Though they all love Walter, they don’t all know each other, and none of them can quite place why Walter has suddenly decided to gather them together after years of silence. Yet here they all are, relaxing by the water and drinking in front of the fire, laughing like they’re all old friends. Or, at least, they were. Then Walter’s people destroyed the rest of the planet, leaving them trapped inside this idyllic little bubble completely under Walter’s control.
“The Nice House on the Lake” is a fantastic horror comic series from James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno coming out of DC’s Black Label imprint. The concept of being trapped by someone you thought you knew, unable to escape and completely under their control, is a terrifying one, and one the comic handles in a fascinating way. The connections between the characters, and between the characters and Walter, are fascinating threads to follow as they all struggle with balancing their love for him and the heinous and terrible things he’s wrought upon them. Each discovery they make leads to more questions than answers about the strange creatures now controlling their world, and every turn leaves you wanting more. “The Nice House on the Lake” is a definite must read for any horror comic fan, especially those gearing up for a Haunting Halloween season!
