Library Pet Recommendations

--Staff Picks General

This Fall, our staff decided to go home and ask their pets what books they would recommend. Our librarians’ cats, dogs, and birds raved about all sorts of books–nonfiction and fiction, books for adults, young adult, and kids! One dog even recommended their favorite television series! The full campaign of Library Pet Recommendations can be found on our social media feeds, but here is a roundup of some of the highlighted books our animal friends couldn’t get enough of and can be checked out from our collection.

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

A picture of the Red, White & Royal Blue book cover.

Hi, I’m Millie and my human is Sarah, HPL’s director. I was born a few months before the pandemic so I spent my puppyhood hanging out with my mum in the Library while it was closed to the public. It helped develop my love of books and reading. In my spare time I love long walks in the woods and at the beach with my favorite humans. But, I love a good cuddle and curling up with a fun book too and one I love to recommend is Red, White, & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. Even if romances aren’t your cup of tea, you’ll like this one. The movie is great too and the actors are the swooniest. Rating: 14/10 belly rubs!

10% Happier : How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help that Actually Works-A True Story by Dan Harris

Hiiiiiiiiii! My name is Salem! My human is Kerri, the Head of Reference and Information Services at the library. I’m a nervous cat because I was born during the COVID lockdown. To help me cope with my scaredy catness, I read self-help books. I really like and recommend 10% Happier : How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help that Actually Works–A True Story by Dan Harris. He’s my favorite TV personality to watch when I am snuggling on the couch with the human who feeds me.

The Last of Us (Television Series)

Hi, hi, hi! My name is Ellie! I’m a pit bull and cattle dog mix! My mom is Megan the Children’s Librarian! My favoritest things in the world are my mom, chasing bunnies, and jumping onto really big rocks! I have lots and lots of energy, so it’s really hard for me to sit still, but I loved watching the show The Last of Us on DVD that my mom brought home from the library! My mom even said that I’m named after the character Ellie! We both love puns, are headstrong, and protective of the people we love.

Cults: Inside the World’s Most Notorious Groups and Understanding the People Who Joined Them by Max Culter

I am Bunny and I LOVE books on CULTS!!! I spend most of my day perched on the back of the couch trying to decide when and how I can run my own cult…THE CULT OF BUNNY THE WISE MAGNIFICANT CAT. My mother, Stephanie from the Tech Services and Circulation departments, will often bring me home books on my favorite subject from our library. I highly recommend the book Cults: Inside the World’s Most Notorious Groups and Understanding the People Who Joined Them by Parcast’s Max Cutler with Kevin Conley.
