This classic guide gives detailed explanations and illustrations in the care of trees and shrubs. It offers specific advice for pruning many different species, and also provides clear guidance for pruning at various life stages and for for different purposes. Some examples: pruning to rejuvenate an older plant, or to create a barrier. There is so much of information in this slim book, including recommendations on which equipment you might need and how to buy and care for it. The author, long-time Vermont tree farmer and master grower, Lewis Hill, shares his wisdom on choosing specimens based on your location, conditions, and gardening temperament. He was clearly an expert in his field and shares his knowledge in a conversational tone that makes a potentially confusing subject very accessible. The illustrations, though simple line drawings, are super effective in helping the reader understand the structure of how these woody plants grow and where and how to cut them for best results.
As a new gardener I found this book invaluable and I highly recommend it to gardeners new and experienced who find themselves responsible for trees and shrubs, or for those who simply have an interest in the subject.
