Join us Friday mornings for a movie! To mark our August summer concert series (Thursdays 8/8, 8/15, & 8/22), this month we are featuring movies that celebrate the joy of music! Today we watch School of Rock (2003). 

8/3 | 11am-12pm | Spanish Conversation Practice

Are you looking to improve your conversational Spanish in a supportive and friendly environment? Join us! Come practice your Spanish speaking and learn some vocab, the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, 11am-12pm. 

No registration required.

8/5 | 9:30-10:30am | Gentle Flow Yoga

This slow and thoughtful practice at room temperature will include yogic breathing, meditation, standing, seated, supine and balancing postures, ending with a deep relaxation. This is a safe practice to help increase flexibility. Options will be offered to help you personalize the practice to support your health and well-being. All levels welcomed, no experience necessary. A yoga mat is required and if you have any props (yoga blocks, towel), feel free to bring them.

*This program involves some physical activity that could result in injury and by participating in this program you are acknowledging these risks and releasing HPL from liability.*

Every Tuesday in August we watch a classic featuring Angela Lansbury long before her days solving mysteries in Cabot Cove. Today we watch The Manchurian Candidate (1962).

Calling all fiber artists! Bring your current project and work on it in the company of other fiber arts enthusiasts.

Does Traditional Jazz make your toes tap? Do you melt when you hear a soft ballad backed by a smooth rhythm section? How about pre-1925 dance hall jazz tunes? Does Gospel music warm your soul? Love a great sultry vocal backed by a horn section? Enjoy creative arrangements of popular music hits from the 1960’s through to today? Oh yes, we forgot to ask – do you like to dance?

The Jazz Disciples have you covered. Just one word of warning – you are going to want to dance.

All ages welcome.

This concert will be outside on the library lawn. Feel free to bring your own chairs, blankets, etc.!

8/13 | 2-3pm | How To Improve Your Recycling Efforts (VIRTUAL)

Julia Greene, Municipal Assistance Coordinator from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, will discuss how to cut down on waste and how to recycle correctly. Julia will give practical advice on how you can improve your efforts to reduce, re-use and recycle in your day-to-day life in order to make a positive impact on our environment. Bring your questions as there will be time for Q&A too.

8/14 | 12-1pm | Fit N Trim

Come join us for a new adult fitness class called Fit N Trim! You can improve your balance, strength and flexibility in this class. 

Wednesdays, July 10th through August 28th from 12-1 with instructor Sandra Bernat.

Adding weight training 1-2x a week will improve your balance, develop stronger bones and improve mobility and endurance so that you can walk/stand longer. Weight training will preserve and enhance muscle mass and reduce the involuntary loss of muscle that occurs as we age.

8/15 | 6-8pm | Summer Concert Series: Windham Swing Band

An 18-piece big band with saxophones, trombones, trumpets, bass, percussion and vocalist. The Windham Swing Band plays music from the Big Band Era to the present, featuring many familiar standards such as “Sing, Sing, Sing,” and “In the Mood.” Its ballroom dance repertoire ranges from swing, waltz, and foxtrot to cha-cha, mambo, samba, rumba, and hustle.  

All ages welcome.

This concert will be outside on the library lawn. Feel free to bring your own chairs, blankets, etc.!

The Haverhill Public Library is offering 30-minute 1-on-1 tech help sessions. 

Do you need some basic tech help? Maybe you want to learn more about checking out e-books or e-audiobooks from the library? We will provide help in the following areas: smartphone basics; tablet basics; basic use of hardware and software for desktops/laptops; email; and guidance on some of the library’s digital services, such as Libby (free eBooks and eAudiobooks). Please bring your device with you if needed!

8/17 | 2-4pm | On Screen: The Fall Guy

Come enjoy a screening of “The Fall Guy” starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Rated PG-13.

After leaving the business one year earlier, battle-scarred stuntman Colt Seavers springs back into action when the star of a big studio movie suddenly disappears. As the mystery surrounding the missing actor deepens, Colt soon finds himself ensnared in a sinister plot that pushes him to the edge of a fall more dangerous than any stunt.

8/21 | 7am-8pm | Monuments Men: Saving Art During World War II

The Monuments Men were a group of approximately 345 men and women from fourteen nations who served in the newly created Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives (MFAA) Section during World War II. From museum directors to art historians and artists, they all shared a common goal: to save cultural treasures from the destructiveness of war, and theft by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. We’ll explore several of the great art treasurers that were saved by these valiant soldiers.

Bio for Martha Chiarchiaro

Martha Chiarchiaro has brought history to life through the art of the times for more than 30 years. She received her Masters’ degree in the History of Art from Williams College and provides a variety of art history presentations at the Worcester Art Museum, for WISE (the Worcester Institute for Senior Education), libraries, senior centers, and a variety of garden clubs. As noted on her Seeing History website, Martha’s specialty presentations related to specific periods, artists, and activities provide an in-depth look at the life and times of people through their art.

8/22 | 6-7pm | Summer Concert Series: Joe Leary

Joe Leary’s “Acoustic Night Out…”

A longtime seasoned performer, Joe has that way of bringing your musical memories to life as he takes you on a journey with the classic acoustic music from the 60’s & 70’s (Eagles, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, John Denver and more). Audiences throughout the years have said, “…I remember where I was when I first heard that song.

Joe’s music recordings, with a new original EP release due out this Spring/Summer of 2024 have received high reviews and accolades for his music from across the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia.

A graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Joe has spent more than half of his life dedicated to the music education of children and adults in both the public and private sectors while still maintaining an active performing, songwriting and recording schedule. Joe recently was invited to one of Andrea Stolpes’ Songwriters Retreat in Nashville, TN.

Sit back, relax, reminisce, and reflect as Joe brings us these classic musical memories.

8/24 | 10-11:30am | Adventurous Readers Club

Join the HPL Adventurous Readers Club! You choose the books and lead the discussions!

This group of anyone 18 or older will feature books across the literary spectrum – whatever genre piques your interest!

We will meet the 4th Saturday of each month. No registration necessary – you can simply pick up a book (limited copies, first come, first served) on the holds shelf in the front of the library.

Our August book will be The Martian, by Andy Weir

8/24 | 10-11am | Guided Meditation Class

A guided mindfulness meditation for all levels. Perfect for beginners!

Class will include:

  • A review of mindfulness meditation and its benefits.
  • Focus on breath. 
  • Short practices of 5 to 10 minutes each of guided meditation. 

Class is one hour long, and students are welcome to bring yoga mats or blankets to sit on.

Led by Wyatt Ward. 

This program will take place outdoors on the side of the library.

Join us for our cookbook club!

We’ll all cook a different recipe from one cookbook and then bring the dishes in to share and discuss, potluck-style, every OTHER 4th Wednesday of the month (our next meeting will be in October)!

  • Register as usual. 
  • Pick up and check out a copy of the cookbook from the Holds shelf.
  • Reserve the recipe you’d like to cook by emailing programming@haverhillpl.org. Reserved recipes will be listed here. 
  • You can cook anything from the book except alcoholic recipes (beverages, etc.).
  • Space is limited.
  • We will provide plates, eating utensils, and napkins (feel free to bring as well). Please bring serving utensils.
  • We cannot reheat or warm anything at the library.
