Special Collections closed on May 1, 2026, for the first phase of the Haverhill Public Library renovation project. We expect to remain closed for at least 4-6 months.*

Phase 1 is addressing the Third Floor, which houses Special Collections, Special Collections’ closed storage areas, and staff areas. Neither patrons nor staff will be able to access Special Collections or the Third Floor once the renovation begins.
Furthermore, our physical collections will be moved offsite. Our collections are being moved to protect them during construction, which is a very good thing, but does mean that the Special Collections Department is limited in our capacity to help researchers for the time being. We will do our best to fill research requests.
While Special Collections is closed, the following resources and services can still be accessed:
- Senter Digital Archive
- Image Requests
- Haverhill Gazette Microfilm (available onsite on the Main Floor)
- Research Services (no fee for HPL cardholders)
- Ancestry Library Edition (available in the library only)
- America’s 250th Birthday Essay Project
Our team will remain available to answer questions throughout the closure. Please note that donations of materials to Special Collections are not accepted at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience and understand the frustration this will cause—we will miss our collections and researchers!
More Special Collections information is always available in our corner of the HPL website: https://haverhillpl.org/special-collections/
*We will update this post immediately if there are changes to the construction schedule.
