Currently on Display: Walnut Square Elementary
On April 13, for the second year in a row, students at Walnut Square Elementary came together for an Art and Literacy Night hosted by the PTO. The evening celebrated the connection between reading and creativity, as students listened to stories inspired by the art of Eric Carle and Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
After the readings, students had the opportunity to explore each artist’s unique style through hands-on activities. Kindergarten and first-grade students listened to Eric Carle’s beloved book The Very Hungry Caterpillar and used colorful tissue paper to create beautiful butterflies. Second- and third-grade students learned about Yayoi Kusama and how she uses dots to develop her distinctive and imaginative style of art.
Art is an integral part of learning. It encourages creativity and innovation, builds confidence and self-esteem, and improves focus and working memory. Art is also known to enhance academic performance. Exploring the artwork connected to books opens a new window for students, fostering a lifelong love of reading and learning.
