Our intrepid hero, Carl, finds himself standing in the snow, in his boxers, holding his girlfriend’s escape artist cat at 2am when all of the surrounding buildings (and all buildings everywhere) are suddenly sucked underground. Scared and freezing, Carl takes Princess Donut (the cat) and runs to the nearest source of light hoping for shelter and warmth. They have entered The Dungeon and are now part of a sadistic game show run by an alien race. The only way to survive is to find the staircase leading to the next level within the allotted time frame. Oh, and Donut also gained the ability to speak upon entering the dungeon, and boy does she have a lot to say.
This book is an absolute wild ride! The action and violence is bonkers, and I legitimately laughed out loud several times. The relationship and power dynamic between Carl and Princess Donut is just the best. This book/series (there’s currently 8 books) is perfect for fans of roleplaying games, reality game shows, and of course, cats.
