The Library’s ongoing renovation is made possible due to the generosity of Olive R. Macdougall and her lasting legacy of philanthropy.
The Transformative Legacy of Olive Reynolds Macdougall

As a young woman growing up in Chatham, MA, a nurse and faculty member of the nursing school at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a long-time resident of Haverhill, Olive Macdougall was well known for her generosity and desire to help others.
Olive moved to Haverhill in 1968 when she married John Macdougall, Jr., a Haverhill lawyer and probate court judge. While they had no children, they were committed to making a difference around the world and close to home. She could often be found in her welcoming kitchen, cooking for friends and family and asking them, “What do you need?” and “How can I help?”
Education was paramount to the Macdougalls, as well as inclusion and accessibility which are among the core values of the Haverhill Public Library. Olive became involved with the library over 30 years ago, donating to the last capital campaign and creating endowed funds. Its mission to enrich and serve the lifelong learning needs of the Haverhill community with exceptional services, programs, and free resources resonated deeply with her.
Before she died in 2021, Olive decided to provide for a remarkable and lasting future for Haverhill’s residents in her estate. She included a $14 million gift to the Haverhill Public Library, which now forms a foundation for the $17 million renovation project HPL began in June 2026. Her legacy will shape and transform the library for generations to come.
