Check out these adult events happening in September!

9/4 | 12-1pm | Fit N Trim

Come join us for a new adult fitness class called Fit N Trim! You can improve your balance, strength and flexibility in this class.

Wednesdays, September 4th through October 30th from 12-1 with instructor Sandra Bernat.

Adding weight training 1-2x a week will improve your balance, develop stronger bones and improve mobility and endurance so that you can walk/stand longer. Weight training will preserve and enhance muscle mass and reduce the involuntary loss of muscle that occurs as we age.

Sponsored by the City of Haverhill Public Health Department.

Are you, a friend or a loved one turning 65, and/or considering retirement and confused about Medicare? You are not alone – a SHINE counselor can explain your options.

Learn about the structure of Medicare, when to enroll, cost-savings programs and helpful tips to choose plans that suit you, your lifestyle and your Medicare insurance needs.

This session will be presented by a certified SHINE Counselor who provides free, unbiased, Medicare health insurance information and will help guide you through all your Medicare options so you will be an empowered, educated consumer.

Light refreshments will be served.

Held this year on September 17, 2024, National Voter Registration Day is dedicated to getting every eligible American registered to vote and this year the Haverhill Public Library has partnered with the Latino Coalition to help spread the word! No matter what party you support or what issues matter most to you, National Voter Registration Day is the perfect time to contribute to our shared American democracy.

Join our voter registration event and its vital celebration of our shared democracy on September 17 at the Haverhill Public Library’s Johnson Auditorium from 6 PM to 8 PM.

Have you ever wondered if you could make healthier food choices in your diet? Sometimes the foods we think are healthy for us may not be the best ones for providing optimal fuel for our body. Most of the foods we consume are loaded with sugar, sodium and fat. We will show you some better alternatives and food swaps for eating at home and when dining out.

9/21 | 3-4:30pm | Theater in the Open presents William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

In celebration of the new MEVA Route #11 connecting Newburyport, Haverhill and Lawrence, Theater in the Open is taking the show on the road (via bus) to Haverhill and Lawrence.

Shakespeare’s beloved comedy Twelfth Night hits the road on a journey of comedic misunderstandings. Disguised as a man, Viola uses her wit and resourcefulness to navigate complex social dynamics and romantic entanglements. As she charms her way through mistaken identities and unanticipated attractions, Viola takes control of her own destiny.

9/23 | 7-8pm | Author Heather Wolf Discusses: Find & Identify More Birds: How to Pick a Patch (VIRTUAL)

One of our favorite speakers, author Heather Wolf, will be discussing how to find and identify more birds by picking a “patch,” a place close to home where you can watch birds often. She’ll be giving tips on how to pick a patch and how to use it not only as a “classroom” to become a better birder, but also as a way to connect more deeply with the nature that surrounds you.

Join the HPL Read Anything Club! 

This group of anyone 18 or older will feature books across the literary spectrum – whatever genre piques your interest!

We will meet the 4th Saturday of each month unless otherwise noted. No registration necessary – you can simply pick up a book (limited copies, first come, first served) on the Holds shelf in the front of the library.

A card making and paper crafting class for beginners as well as those with stamping and papercrafting experience.

We will be creating projects such as multi layered cards, bookmarks and 3-D Items, using several techniques including stamping, die cutting, and embossing.

9/30 | 7-8pm | Great Boston Fires with Author and Historian David Kruh (VIRTUAL)

A look at the devastating fires and their impact on Boston, from the many “great” fires of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries (including the truly Great Fire of 1872,) the Cocoanut Grove tragedy of 1942 (which killed 492,) and the Hotel Vendome fire of 1972 (which resulted in the deaths of nine fire fighters.) How did these fires happen? What was learned from these events? What, if anything, was done to try and prevent similar catastrophes? David’s newest slide show, filled with images from these events, answers these and other questions.

Recording note: This program will be recorded and a video link will be sent to all registrants soon after David’s talk.
