Preservation Month in Special Collections

Behind the scenes in the Special Collections department: John Bellairs titles.

Preservation Week is an annual event during the week of May Day that celebrates the care of collections and emergency preparedness for cultural heritage. While 2025 Preservation Week has passed (it was April 27-May 3), HPL Special Collections is always thinking about the preservation and protection of our collections.

Since Preservation Week last year, we have made a lot of progress in the care, protection, and accessibility of our collections, especially when it comes to organization and storage. We have made hundreds of titles discoverable in the online catalog, properly stored and “rehoused” thousands of fragile and rare titles, and have added over 800 images to the Senter Digital Archive!

But preservation also is something that anyone who has personal collections, important documents, and family heirlooms can put into practice! To help the home practitioners in our community, we are launching a new Special Collections blog series on At-Home Preservation later this month.

We also welcome you to ask our Special Collections team about taking care of your personal collections. We are happy to help! As always, more information about our department is always available in our corner of the HPL website: https://haverhillpl.org/special-collections/
