Ayer Family Papers

This collection contains legal documents, letters, account books, genealogy, and photographs for the John Ayer (1792-1874) family of Haverhill, Massachusetts. This family is descended from John Ayer (died 1657) of England. It also includes a few items from Samuel Ayer, John Ayer II, and John Ayer III, who are descended from a different branch of the Ayer family.

Richard E. Becker

This collection documents the activities and interests of Richard E. Becker, an accountant in Haverhill, Massachusetts. It has been organized into four series. Series one contains ship logs documenting Boy Scout cruises. Series two contains materials about events and publications that relate to the Boy Scouts in Haverhill. Series three contains scripts and programs for plays. Series four consists of other materials that relate to Becker’s time with the Boy Scouts.

Brickett Family Papers

This collection contains legal documents, letters, receipts, and genealogy for the John Brickett (1740-1825) family of Haverhill, Massachusetts. It includes some receipts for Dr. James Brickett (1738-1818) and his son, Dr. Daniel Brickett (1761-1834), cousins of the John Brickett family.

Clifford Hoffman Chase

This collection is comprised of primarily of verse and prose writings composed by Clifford Hoffman Chase. Within the prose collection, there are sections of two novels, short stories primarily centered on the theater setting, plays, and character portraits and sketches. Much of the verse is concerned with the natural world, city life, and love. The collection also contains portions of letters written by Clifford Hoffman Chase, and they are incomplete. All of the writings are drafts and most are heavily edited.

Corliss Family Papers

This collection contains mostly legal documents (deeds and wills) for the Ephraim Corliss family of Haverhill, Massachusetts, but also includes a plot plan, a letter, a manuscript, and genealogy.

James Duncan Jr. Papers

This collection consists of 25 annual almanacs, some containing personal notations, and an account book that belonged to James Duncan, Jr., merchant of Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Samuel W. Duncan Papers

Samuel W. Duncan was a Baptist minister from Haverhill, Massachusetts, during the mid- to late 1800s. The materials in the collection document Duncan’s life and that of his family members through letters. It includes a list of militia in Bradford, Massachusetts, in 1864.

Emerson Family

The materials in this collection are from the Emerson family of Haverhill, Massachusetts. This collection is made up of four series. Series one contains family information,including specifications for William Wells Emerson’s house, some genealogical information for the Emerson family, and an autograph album belonging to Calenda George.Series two contains receipts from Jonathan M. Bean and George S. Frame. Series three contains photographs and postcards. Series four consists of publications and ephemera from events that the Emerson family may have attended.

Emerson-Smith Family

This collection provides information about Captain Nehemiah Emerson, Revolutionary War soldier of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and his descendants. The collection is made up of five series. Materials include genealogy information, receipts, letters, essays, and photographs that relate to members of the family. There are also letters and correspondence from Greg Laing, who was the curator of Special Collections at the Haverhill Public Library, and some articles of clothing belonging to Mary Emerson and Joseph Smith.

Charles M. Fleischner

This collection provides information about Charles M. Fleischner, who served as the librarian of the Haverhill Public Library from 1955-1966. Series one and two contain materials that relate to Fleischner’s time as a student at Yale. There is only one item that relates to his time as librarian at Haverhill; that can be found in series 3. Series 4 contains his autobiography, and in chapter 19 he writes about his time as librarian.

Dr. Arnold P. George

This collection provides a general overview of the activities and interests of Dr. Arnold P. George, a practicing physician in Haverhill, Massachusetts. It contains newspaper clippings documenting a few personal milestones as well as obituaries of family members and medical publications and papers from colleagues. Since Dr. George was a part of many different associations all around the Haverhill area, programs from various events and societies are included in the collection.

Hale/Currier Family Papers

This collection documents the lives of Walter Scott Hale, son of Henry Hosford Hale of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and his family in papers and photographs.

Joseph Haynes Family

The Joseph Haynes family papers document the life and activities of Joseph Haynes (1715-1801), his children, and business associates. Because Joseph Haynes served as administrator for Captain Richard Ayer (1726-1781), this collection contains a small group of Ayer’s papers. Of interest on the back of an Ayer estate document (Timothy Ladd’s account), is a partial letter dated 1779 from the Committee of Safety for the town of Haverhill. Documents include estate and legal documents, financial records, some plot plans, and a few maritime documents.

Harding Family

This collection provides an overview of the activities and interests of the Albert G. Harding family of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Included in the collection are two photograph albums, loose photographs, some artwork of Alice E. Harding, genealogy, a family scrapbook,and newspaper clippings. The scrapbook contains correspondence, receipts, ephemera, and genealogy, as well as newspaper clippings.

Edwin Walter Howe

This collection contains a series of letters from Edwin W. Howe to Mrs. John B. Mason, Secretary of the Haverhill Historical Society, about his family history and some Howe family genealogy charts and notes. He was living in Ottawa, Kansas, at the time.

Charles N. Hoyt Papers

This collection contains papers of Charles N. Hoyt, a farmer and businessman from Haverhill, Massachusetts. It also contains records of the North Parish Church Ministerial Funds Trustees, as Hoyt was a trustee.

Harry Edwin Hurd

This collection contains papers of Harry Elmore Hurd (1889-1958),a pastor at Center Congregational Church in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Hurd served from 1924-1929. He was also a well-known poet who had published six books.

This collection consists of the 51 original diaries of Haverhill, Massachusetts, shoemaker and farmer, Isaac W. Merrill, plus transcriptions, genealogy, indices, and other material pertaining to the diaries.

Edmund G. Miller

This collection provides a general overview of the activities and interests of Edmund G. Miller, an accountant in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Included in the materials original comic panels, various histories and correspondence with Bob Montana.

Bob Montana

This collection provides information about Bob Montana, creator of the Archie comic strip. Series one contains biographical information about him, a copy of his high school diary, issues of Brown and Gold, information about an exhibit held in Haverhill in 1989, photographs, as well as newspaper clippings. Series two consists of large format comic panels and series three contains two video cassette recordings of programs about Bob Montana.

Anne Carroll Moore Papers

This collection contains correspondence, writings, notes, research material and other material by Anne Carroll Moore, an American children’s librarian, lecturer, and children’s book author and reviewer in the first half of the 20th century.

William H. Moody Clippings

William H. Moody was a lawyer and politician who served as a United States Representative, Secretary for the Navy, Attorney General, and Supreme Court Justice. This collection of newspaper clippings document Justice Moody’s life and political career.

This collection mostly contains copies of talks given by John G. Moulton, Librarian of the Haverhill Public Library in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The collection has two series. Series one contains essays and papers that may or may not have been published. Series two contains one newspaper clipping about a lecture that he gave at the First Universalist Church in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Mike Ryan

This collection contains objects, photographs, and newspaper clippings about Mike Ryan, a Major League baseball player. There are two series in this collection. Series one includes Ryan’s Philadelphia Phillies jersey and hat. Series two consists of a photograph of Ryan in his Boston Red Sox uniform and catching gear and six snapshots of Ryan making a hit. Series three includes a set of newspaper clippings and a special issue from the Haverhill Gazette from 1995.

Saltonstall Family

This collection is comprised of materials that were collected by the Haverhill Public Library related to the Saltonstall family. The collection is organized into five series. Series one contains genealogy of the Saltonstall family. Series two has essays about the family. Series three consists of some copies and transcriptions of letters and some printed material by and about Leverett Saltonstall (1783-1845). Series four contains two letters to Leonard W. Smith about furniture, and series five contains newspaper clippings from local and regional newspapers.

Thomas Sanders Family Collection

This collection documents the lives of Thomas Sanders of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and his family in papers and photographs.

Lillian Shapiro Papers

This collection contains military records, personal correspondence, mementos, newspaper clippings, and photographs pertaining to Captain Lillian Shapiro, the first member of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps from Haverhill, Massachusetts.
